Regulations and Other Challenges
The healthcare industry is facing a variety of challenges related to the huge quantity of information, data and forms that flow through the organization. These documents include eligibility, enrollment, payment/remittance, referrals, Explanation of Benefit forms (EOB’s), HCFA (pronounced hicva) and UB92 claim forms, claim status reports, lab reports, prescriptions, service orders, insurance cards, patient files, admittance records and more. The Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountablity Act (HIPAA) and Medicare Conditions of Participation (MCP) require that patient and medical records must be retained for specified periods. Much of this information contains patient health information (PHI) that must be protected under HIPAA.
To address their information exchange, retention, privacy and compliance issues, companies are striving to do the following:
- Increase security
- Decrease unauthorized information access
- Decrease paper handling and processing
- Eliminate manual keying
- Validate data
- Streamline workflow
- Increase tracking
- Improve claims handling and delivery times
- Automate records management
All of these issues can be addressed with an Enterprise Content Management solution.
Hospitals
There is tremendous potential for increasing the efficiency of hospital workers and drastically reducing the risk of medical errors without changing how healthcare professionals conduct business or provide care. Systemwide solutions can be customized for a provider’s specific needs and budget, and can help realize such benefits as tightening the revenue cycle.
